DMVProspects.com Programs & Products
As DMVProspects.com continues to grow in popularity – and as we grow our network – everything we do is geared toward finding a way to help more local players and families understand the hockey landscape beyond high school and 18U and to provide programs and other opportunities that allow players to develop a completely as possible on the ice, off the ice, as athletes and as people. Educational Seminars
Scott Lowe (always available on request) or other members of the DMVProspects.com staff will come out to your rink or other facility to talk to your team, multiple teams or your organization about the different pathways and options available to players who wish to continue playing hockey beyond high school and 18U. College and/or junior coaches from inside or outside the area can potentially be brought in for additional cost. Craig Laughlin, former Capitals forward and one of the TV voices of the Caps, also may be available to join the presentation. Parents are always encouraged to attend and to bring their questions.
Presentations will include, but not be limited to the following topics:
-
-
Tier 1 and Tier 2 – USHL, NAHL, NCDC “tuition free” leagues, their organization and realities along with USA Hockey vs. not USA Hockey sanctioned.
-
Reputable Tier 3 leagues – This is “pay to play” hockey, and it’s not cheap. Financial realities, leagues and teams that are reputable, leagues and teams that should be avoided, red flags and other things to look out for.
-
What’s the best option for you – Go where you are wanted and will have the best chance to develop and ultimately reach your goals.
-
Beware of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 “money grab”
-
Juniors vs. 18U AAA opportunities
-
Living arrangements – what to expect.
-
The junior lifestyle – practice, off-ice, work, school.
-
Plan of action if this is the chosen route.
-
The Prep School Pathway
-
A family decision – Is the player ready to leave home and the family ready for the player to go emotionally, socially academically and financially.
-
Pros and cons
-
The prep school landscape – Mid-Atlantic/New Jersey, New York, New England, Canada, other areas.
-
No guarantees – You have to make the varsity team and prove you can compete at that level.
-
Challenges – Many players want more games and look to split-season AAA teams to get this. More cost, more travel and more challenging logistics.
-
Plan of action if this is the route chosen.
-
Ready for College Now?
-
College is NEVER the wrong answer and may be the only answer once the family takes everything into consideration.
-
Except in very rare instances, players who decide to go to college right out of high school and still play hockey will be looking at ACHA (club) opportunities.
-
ACHA Landscape – Division I, Division II and Division III and what to expect from each.
-
Making the right choice based on criteria presented earlier.
-
Does this mean no hockey after college?
-
Plan of action if this is the route taken.
-
The NCAA Way
-
1-3 years junior hockey likely required.
-
Understanding the odds – 1% of youth hockey players end up playing NCAA hockey, D1 odds much smaller.
-
Division I – 60 or so schools offering athletic, need-based and academic aid
-
Division II – 1 conference, 7 teams, play mostly D3 schedule, some athletic aid, need-based aid and academic aid offered.
-
Division III – Approximately 75 schools competing in regional conferences mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, academic and need-based aid offered.
-
135 teams total, so the level of play is very high and it is extremely competitive to play at any of the levels; compare to more than 300 men’s basketball teams in Division I alone.
-
Schools are mostly on the smaller side with a wide range of academic standards and reputations – do your research and find a fit.
-
What is the best combination for the player in terms of academics and hockey that gives the player a good chance for success in both aspects?
-
Make final decision based on criteria discussed earlier.
-
The process – Testing and when to start reaching out to coaches consistently, when to apply, what to do if accepted, financial aid.
-
Plan of action if this is the desired route – sometimes it chooses you instead of you choosing it.
-
Other Odds and Ends
-
Corresponding with coaches and scouts – timing, how much to say, advocating for yourself.
-
Level of parental involvement.
-
Soliciting your coach and organization’s support.
-
Scouting/recruiting services.
-
Hockey resume, video and other materials.
-
Things to consider throughout the process – when it is time to move on?

Video Analysis of Game Play
A member of our DMV Prospects staff will evaluate a video compilation of a player’s shifts for an entire game. This will include written and oral communication, analysis of the player’s performance and suggestions to help the player improve overall play as well as play within the context of specific game situations.
Pricing for Video Analysis is as Follows:
For an additional $50 per game we will post all video provided or clipped to a YouTube channel designed specifically for that player to use for self-promotion and in communication with higher-level coaches and scouts. Here is an example of what we do and how it would be broken down for each player.
Notice there would be different playlists – one playlist for each full game, with clips also assigned to individual situational playlists for things such as goals, assists, penalty kill, power play, blocked shots, etc. These links can then be sent to coaches or scouts so they can watch all aspects of a player’s game and zero in on areas of interest.
If you would like us to have a scout, player or coach in our network analyze one of your games, there will be an additional cost to what is listed above to accommodate that request. Please email us at DMVProspects@gmail.com with your request so we can try to arrange it and set up pricing.
DMV Prospects Showcase Teams
Each spring and summer we assemble invitation-only teams to compete in the top spring and summer showcase events around the country. A list of the events we are considering for 2020 are listed below subject to change.
We charge one fee for each tournament, but showcase team spots can be purchased for multiple events and included in larger packages or customized membership packages at a reduced per-event price. DMV Prospects Showcase Guarantee
DMV Prospects has been creating a network of REPUTABLE scouts and coaches from REPUTABLE junior teams and leagues over the past four years, and those will be the people that we will be exposing and introducing our players to along with NCAA and ACHA college and New England Prep School programs. We GUARANTEE that we will reach out to coaches and scouts in our network – as well as others of interest to our players – prior to each showcase event and that coaches and scouts will come to watch our teams play. No other spring/summer showcase program will spend the time we spend trying to get our players exposed to the right organizations.

DMV Prospects Spring On-Ice Training
We will offer Tuesday and Thursday morning training skates for any junior players returning to our area – as well as any local junior, college and AAA players who are available – starting in April at Reisterstown Sportsplex, located at 401 Mitchell Drive, Reisterstown, MD 21126. These skates will be run by DMV Prospects Coach and Reisterstown Hockey Director Joe Vonakis along with various local players who have gone on to play professionally either here or abroad. Pro players also will participate in the small-group skates, which will focus on skill development, position-specific play, small games and individual areas of weakness as players prepare for spring tryouts and draft camps. Cost for these skates, which will run until mid-June, will be $20-$30, depending on the number of skaters that participate on a given day. Sessions will last between 75 and 90 minutes.
Tentative Dates: April 21 – June 18
DMV Prospects Summer Intensive Training
Once players are back from college and prep school, they will join the junior and other local players on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the DMV Prospects Summer Training program begins in mid-June. This 10-week is designed to ramp up in intensity as the season approaches and players get ready for their training programs. It also provides opportunities for off-ice training on skating days at the rink as well as on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday with a certified NCAA Division I Strength & Conditioning Coach at his gym in North Baltimore, about 20 minutes from the Reisterstown rink. Over the past two years we have had professional players; NCAA Division I and III players; Tier 1, 2 and 3 junior players; AAA players and prep school players participate in this program.
Our program provides for two on-ice sessions per week, and we also encourage our players to play in the Sunday Elite Hockey League for a highly competitive game experience with other high-level players. We feel very strongly that players from our area who hope to play at the highest levels of junior hockey or at the NCAA level, should take advantage of the summer months to build their strength through intensive off-ice training sessions with a certified strength and conditioning coach. The physical strength needed to compete with older players at those levels seems to be missing when it comes to most of the players from our area, so we encourage less time on the ice and more time in the weight room. Our strength & conditioning partner is Brandon Huggins, an NCAA Division I strength and conditioning coaching who also has worked with the U.S. Lacrosse national teams.
Brandon has worked with a group of our players the past two summers out of his facility, Training House, in North Baltimore. He is more than willing to work with small groups of hockey players, integrate individual players with his Division I athletes or make other arrangements. Brandon also is willing to come to the rink following our summer skates to do speed and conditioning work with our players. We feel too many players spend too much time on the ice while neglecting overall strength development.
Our program allows players who want to skate more plenty of time throughout the week to train with other coaches, but we highly recommend no more than 2-3 days of on-ice training combined with at least three days of off-ice training, and Brandon has done amazing things with our players. We also have strong relationships with other strength coaches and training programs around the area if making the trip to the Baltimore area isn’t realistic that many days a week. If you would like us to get you in touch with Brandon or another coach, please email us at DMVProspects@gmail.com.
Ala carte per-session, weekly, monthly and full-summer pricing will be available and announced before January 1. This program can be included as part of a DMV Prospects full membership package. Email DMVProspects@gmail.com for more details.
Tentative Dates: June 23 – August 27
Sunday Elite Hockey League – SEHL Spring/Summer
The SEHL began two years ago as a Sunday evening game for the highest-level players in our area to include in their training programs – an up-tempo, high level game with a referee to keep things under control to supplement their on-ice training. For years, college basketball players have played pick-up games against other college players and higher-level professionals as part of their training regimens. With limited ice time available and players scattered all over the area, this had never been possible in the DMV with hockey. We tried it in the summer of 2018, inviting all of the Stevenson University NCAA Division III players who spent the summer in the area, all junior and prep school players returning to the area and local AAA players between 16 and college ages, to come out to Reisterstown Sportsplex to play every Sunday from May through mid-August.
The response was overwhelming, and the level of play in Year 1 was phenomenal. NCAA college players served as captains on the bench to keep shifts short and make sure playing time was equal, but other than that players were free to be as creative as they wanted to while competing in a low-contact, high-paced game on a weekly basis. And we scheduled the games on Sunday evenings to the players could have most of their weekends free to be kids and enjoy the summer.
The response was so great that we expanded to four teams this year, added a draft in February, played a 13-week schedule, added a Tuesday night game for players who missed the Sunday games or wanted to prove themselves worthy of a Sunday invite and crowned our first-ever SEHL champion in mid-August.
The season included three “preseason games” before all of the players had returned home, a slate of regular-season contests, semifinals and a championship game. For a story on the league and who has participated, please click here.
This year’s draft will be held on Super Bowl Sunday, with selections being announced via Twitter. Preseason games should start in mid-May, with games running through mid-August. Any player who participated this year is eligible to be drafted. If you would like to be considered for the February 2020 draft, please send us an email at DMVProspects@gmail.com.
GELSTX – The Ultimate Training Stick
GELSTX, a weighted hockey training stick, that uses a special gel polymer infused throughout the stick to increase the weight of the stick while maintaining a similar flex, kick-point, curve and feel to a player’s game stick, has taken the hockey world by storm. The extra weight in the stick and extra resistance allows players to build strength whether shooting or stickhandling while providing the same feel as the sticks that they use in games. Go to the website www.GELSTX.com for all the information you will need about this amazing product that currently is being used by many NHL teams, NCAA Division I and III programs and the United States National Team Development program.
