DMV Prospects Spring On-Ice Training
For the past two years we have offered Tuesday and Thursday morning training skat
es for any junior players returning to our area – as well as any local junior, college and AAA players who are available – starting in April at Reisterstown Sportsplex, located at 401 Mitchell Drive, Reisterstown, MD 21126.

These have been run by DMV Prospects Coach and Reisterstown Hockey Director Joe Vonakis along with various local players who have gone on to play professionally either here or abroad such as Mike Chen (SPHL, ECHL, KHL, VHL), David Bondra (KHL) and Eric Sweetman (EHL, AHL) Pro players also have participated in the small-group skates, which focus on skill development, position-specific play, small games and individual areas of weakness as the junior players prepare for spring tryouts and draft camps.
Cost for these skates, which will start up again in Spring 2020 and run until mid-June, will be $20-$30, depending on the number of skaters that participate on a given day. Sessions will last between 75 and 90 minutes.
Tentative 2020 Dates: April 21 – June 18
DMV Prospects Summer Intensive Training
Once players are back from college and prep school, they join the junior and other local players on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the DMV Prospects Summer Training program begins in mid-June. This 10-week program is designed to ramp up in intensity as the season approaches and players get ready for their training camps. It also provides opportunities for off-ice training on skating days at the rink as well as on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a certified NCAA Division I Strength & Conditioning Coach at his gym in North Baltimore, about 20 minutes from the Reisterstown rink.
Over the past two years we have had professional players; NCAA Division Iand III players; Tier 1, 2 and 3 junior players; AAA players and prep school players participate in this program.
Our program provides for two on-ice sessions per week, and we also encourage our players to play in the Sunday Elite Hockey League for a highly competitive game experience with other high-level players. We feel very strongly that players from our area who hope to play at the highest levels of junior hockey or at the NCAA level, should take advantage of the summer months to build their strength through intensive off-ice training sessions with a certified strength and conditioning coach. The physical strength needed to compete with older players at those levels seems to be missing when it comes to most of the players from our area, so we encourage less time on the ice and more time in the weight room. Our strength & conditioning partner is Brandon Huggins, an NCAA Division I strength and conditioning coaching who also has worked with the U.S. Lacrosse national teams.
Brandon has worked with a group of our players the past two summers out of his facility, Training House, in North Baltimore. He is more than willing to work with small groups of hockey players, integrate individual players with his Division I athletes or make other arrangements. Brandon also is willing to come to the rink following our summer skates to do speed and conditioning work with our players. We feel too many players spend too much time on the ice while neglecting overall strength development.
Our program allows players who want to skate more plenty of time throughout the week to train with other coaches, but we highly recommend no more than 2-3 days of on-ice training combined with at least three days of off-ice training, and Brandon has done amazing things with our players. We also have strong relationships with other strength coaches and training programs around the area if making the trip to the Baltimore area isn’t realistic that many days a week. If you would like us to get you in touch with Brandon or another coach, please email us at DMVProspects@gmail.com.
Ala carte per-session, weekly, monthly and full-summer pricing will be available and announced before January 1. This program can be included as part of a DMV Prospects full membership package. Email DMVProspects@gmail.com for more details.
